Mistakes When Heat Styling Your Hair
Beat the heat by knowing how to correctly style your hair using heat tools. We’re all guilty of grabbing heat tools when our hair starts a war on us. It’s the quickest way to make it look presentable. However, it’s also the quickest way to damage and cause major hair breakage
Don’t give up on your precious hair tools to make your mane look amazing, but do avoid the following if you want to keep it healthy and shiny.
DON’T USE THEM TOO OFTEN
Using styling tools every day is a big no-no. Even if you use it once, there’s still the risk of drying out your hair, causing breakage and split ends. You might not notice the damage right away, but in a short time span you’ll see that your is suffering. Use styling tools as few times per week as possible.
DON’T USE THE HIGHEST HEAT SETTING
If you have temperature settings on your styling tools, don’t ignore it. Imagine turning up the heat to maximum, and trying to put it on your skin. It wouldn’t be a pleasant experience, and the damage would be irreparable. The same things happens when you use maximum heat on your hair strands that are thin and delicate. Use minimum heat setting to reduce damage.
DON’T FORGET TO USE A HEAT PROTECTANT
The days of styling your hair without a heat protectant are over, if they were ever in to begin with. Just as you would use sunscreen in the summer to protect your skin from the sun, use a heat protectant to protect your hair. It’s best to choose products without alcohol or protein in it, because they tend to cause more damage in combination with a styling tool.
DON’T KEEP IT ON YOUR HAIR FOR TOO LONG
Minimise the time the heat tools are actually pressed against your hair strands. Never hold a flat iron in one place, make sure it’s gliding through the hair, and don’t hold your curling iron for longer than a couple of seconds.
DON’T FORGET TO BRING THE MOISTURE BACK
If you’re using heating tools frequently, don’t forget to bring back moisture in your hair. Use a hydrating mask or a treatment at the salon ( we love Kevin Murphy REPAIR for in salon which is protein +moisture blend , $30) for hydrating your hair, and making sure it doesn’t dry out too much.
DON’T AVOID SECTIONING THE HAIR
It’s important to section of your hair, so that when you are actually using the styling tool, the heat is evenly distributed, and you don’t have to go over, multiple times, trying to get desired results. Start from the back and work your way towards the front and upper section of the hair.
The fact is, once you start using heat tools you never go back. You can’t give up that precious, shiny, amazing look. But you do have the obligation to keep your hair protected and healthy, because no tools can repair once irreversible damage has been done. Take care of your mane!
